Uptown Market Announces First Brewery

Portland, Ore. — February 26, 2013— Uptown Market, a specialty brew store, today announced the opening of the first brewery in Beaverton, Oregon projected for completion July 2013. The brewery which currently includes an extensive list of beer and wine, as well as brewing supplies, espresso, friendly staff, and a full schedule of promotions, tastings, competitions and events, will now feature Uptown Market’s own finely crafted brews.

President’s Day weekend marked the return of Zwickelmania, a day long, state-wide celebration of Oregon craft beer. Sponsored by the Oregon Brewers Guild, Zwickelmania gives craft beer lovers a behind the scenes look into their favorite beers and the breweries that make them. This is a day when breweries open their doors to the public offering free tours and samples, often times right from the fermenters. The name Zwickelmania actually comes from the term zwickel, which is the valve on a fermenter that brewers use to pour samples and see how the beer is coming along.

Favorite Beer: Right now? Give me something dark and hoppy. Oakshire O'Dark:30, Laurelwood Ink Heart CDA, or Deschutes Hop in the Dark come to mind. Also, Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin or Wookey Jack. I have a particularly soft spot for great sessionable rye beers and amazing pumpkin beers, like Fort George Quiet Rye-It and Southern Tier Pumpking. I'm a Portlander, so a big hoppy Imperial IPA is always going to get my attention. Honestly, too many amazing craft beers to name out there which I am a fan of.

Favorite Beer Haunt: Horse Brass, Belmont Station, Caps & Corks, Bottles, and Roscoe's.

Captured By Porches Update

According to the Captured By Porches (CBP) Facebook page all of their beer buses have been shut down. Hopefully this is only temporary. They have noted this on their webpage: “Due to licensing issues involving the City of Portland directly, Captured by Porches is closing its doors temporarily, pending a decision to be allowed to continue operation by the OLCC Commission. After accepting our temporary licenses as sufficient for operating purposes for the last 2 YEARS, the City of Portland has taken away Captured by Porches right to use such licenses by stating that we have used them as though they were annual licenses when, in fact, we did not have an annual license. Captured by Porches has been left to await a decision to determine whether or not we can still use temporaries in our business.

An Anniversary To Remember

Saturday February 16th: To kick off our three-year anniversary we will be offering brewery tours in conjunction with Zwickelmania from 11am-4pm and providing samples of Clems Cream Ale aged in an Aquvit barrel. As the party continues throughout the night a few different kegs will be tapped to celebrate including Frankie Clause, our 11.8% Belgian chocolate stout, and the three-year anniversary beer the Triploid IPA. Very limited 22oz. bottles of the Triploid will also be available for sale available only at Migration.

Lucky Lab Barleywine Tastival 2013

The Lucky Lab Beer Hall Announces Their Annual Barleywine and Big Beer Tastival for 2013.

The Lucky Lab Barleywine and Big Beer Tastival is being held on March 8th and 9th this year! Barleywines tend to be an uncommon beer style due to the high cost of brewing and cellar space. Over the years the Lucky Lab has been collecting, storing and cellaring a variety of strong beers for your enjoyment. This event will focus on barleywines as well as rare big beers. The selection will include current and vintage barleywines to showcase how the beer can develop over time. While these beers may be enjoyed fresh, the aging process can soften and meld the flavors. Barleywines have a complex flavor profile, which typically ranges from sweet toffee to piney caramel, but can also include so much more.

A Glimpse of Worthy Brewing

Special thanks to special post written by Chris Baker who was lucky enough to be in Bend this last weekend and stopped by Worthy Brewing to check it out. 

The long awaited opening of Worthy Brewing was kicked off with a very successful soft opening on Monday in which there was a sizable crowd and a wait to be seated. This seemed to be a great start for the grand opening that is planned for April 5th. The  brewery is a bit off of the current Bend Ale Trail path but the reason is very obvious being the massive facility has room to flaunt it’s 29,000 sq. ft. of space. Unfortunately,
 the brewery wasn't open for tours but they made up for it with an extremely friendly and apologetic (even though it wasn't warranted) staff, quality menu and a taster tray that cradled their five opening releases.
