Road Trip for Washington Beer!

64 Participating Breweries Announced

The 7th Annual Washington Brewers Festival is less than a month away and below is the list of 61 Washington craft breweries (and three from outside the state) that will be on hand at King County's Marymoor Park in Redmond the weekend of June 15-17. Washington breweries will occupy 61 of the 64 available pouring stations this year, the highest number ever! (there were 50 Washington breweries last year, the previous high). The Festival kicks off on Friday, June 15 at 4pm, with more than 40 of these breweries on hand. All 64 breweries will be on site pouring more than 200 unique craft beers on Saturday and Sunday. Approximately 14,000 attendees are expected for this Father's Day weekend celebration at the new Marymoor Park venue.

                        Designated Drivers
                        Designated driver admission is $5 and available at the gate only. It includes complimentary water, root beer and the entertainment.

BEERS              The Festival is a celebration of world class beer brewed here in Washington, offering a great variety of craft beer including many NW style hoppy beers, refreshing summer seasonal brews and hard-to-find rarities. Friday is a Washington Beer-exclusive event and select Washington breweries will be open (40+ breweries) with many offering Friday-exclusive beers. Saturday and Sunday will feature a 64 brewery lineup with more than 200 beers on tap. 

                        Back this year is the Buzz Cart, a unique beer bar that will tap a special premium kegs at different times each day of the festival.

KIDS                In addition to the spectacular beer selection for dads the Festival offers many activities for the young ones including bouncy toys and a kids’ craft tent where they can make Fathers Day gifts. In addition Washington Beer’s own root beer garden will serve up premium craft root beer brewed by local breweries.

CIDER/WINE   This year’s expanded Cider & Wine Tasting Tent will feature four Washington cider makers and a nice selection of wine from Vessel Wine Company.

LIVE MUSIC     From funk, alt-country rock to blues, just like the beer selection the Festival’s music lineup also features an eclectic blend of the Northwest musical talents. Friday night features Geoffrey Castle and Saturday night features Nigel Mustafa.

FOOD              Fantastic offerings including locally renowned Skillet and Jerk Station making delicious pairings with Washington beer!

What was the first craft brew you ever tried? Bridgeport IPA
What did you think? I thought I was drinking the best beverage I had ever tasted. (I was 15 by the way).

Do you homebrew? I leave brewing to the professionals.

How’d you hear about the pdxbeergeeks? My good friend Michael told me about it.

What does being a beer geek mean to you? It means having access to the best beers in the region and sharing those beers with solid, down to Earth people.

If you could change one thing about beer culture in the US, what would it be? I don't know that I would change anything. I feel it has grown very organically and I would love to see it continually evolve. But it would be nice to see proper glassware wherever craft beer is served.

What do you love about Portland’s Craft Beer scene? The food that comes along with it and the People. Beer geeks get a lot of guff about being snobs, but I think the people tend to be approachable and open to criticism and new ideas. This is not always my experience in other areas of artisinal craft.

Pints for Prostates Portland Pale Ale Invitational Announces Beers
Inaugural Event Celebrates America’s Favorite Beer Style

PORTLAND, OREGON – The beer lineup for the inaugural Pints for Prostates Portland Pale Ale Invitational has been released. The event will be held on July 25 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland, Ore.

“Our goal was to create an event to celebrate the allure, complexity and flavors of pale ale, while raising awareness about an important men’s health issue,” said Rick Lyke, a drinks journalist and prostate cancer survivor. Lyke founded Pints for Prostates in 2008 after successful prostate cancer surgery. “Thanks to the help of 24 great breweries we have been able to put together a very special beer tasting.”

The tasting event features pale ales from a dozen Oregon breweries and a dozen breweries from around the globe. Presented by Beer West magazine in conjunction with theOregon Brewers Festival, the event benefits the Pints for Prostates campaign, which reaches men through the universal language of beer with a message about the importance of early detection

Tickets for the Portland Pale Ale Invitational are $30 and are available online at http://www.pintsforprostates.org . All net proceeds support the mission of the Pints for Prostates campaign. Only 500 tickets for this special event will be sold.

“We are excited about the brewers that have agreed to take part and the world class pale ales they will be pouring. Beer fans will get the chance to try a wide variety of pale ale styles in a single session,” said Megan Flynn, publisher and editor-in-chief of Beer West magazine. “Pale ales have become America’s favorite type of craft beer. This event salutes the passion brewers and beer drinkers have for pale ale.”

Judges at the Great American Beer Festival award medals in seven different pale ale categories. Pale ale categories attract the most entries and are the hottest contested.

“Men are 33 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer than women are to have breast cancer, yet few men know about the critical importance of early detection,” Lyke said. “The support of Beer West magazine, the Oregon Brewers Festival and the two dozen great craft brewers donating beer for the event will help us reach an audience that needs to hear our message.”

Northwest Canning Can.... Can you?




In this crazy world of craft beer, one always wants a fresh and economical approach to delivering one's beer to the people. Now, say you're just a bitty little brewery - and you can't rightly afford a canning line of your very own. What's a brewery to do? 


Northwest Canning to the rescue! 











Northwest Canning, LLC is a mobile beverage canning operation that serves local craft breweries. Most breweries are unable to can their beer because it requires a large initial investment in inventory and machinery. Thanks to Northwest Canning, micro-brewers now have access to the materials and equipment to make canning their beer possible.



Craft breweries are turning to canning because it is more cost effective and eco-friendly than bottling, which allows them to conquer new markets and increase their profit margin.



Northwest Canning was started by Justin Brandt and Arne Hakanson, both graduates of Linfield College and members of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, where their friendship solidified. Having earned experience in the business world from running successful financial advising practices, Brandt and Hakanson’s goal is to provide excellent and reliable customer service.  Brandt runs the day-to-day operations and services micro-breweries in both Oregon and Washington.



“We are the first to do this in the Pacific Northwest,” Hakanson, a Tacoma local said, “no one else in the area is providing a mobile canning service. By canning with us, craft breweries will reach untapped markets.”



“Cans are far superior to bottles” explained Brandt, a Portland resident. “Because cans are not affected by UV light and contain less dissolved oxygen, canning results in a higher-quality, longer-lasting brew.”



Northwest Canning recently completed its first canning run with Tacoma’s Wingman Brewers, canning their Ace IPA and P-51 Porter.

What was the first craft brew you ever tried? What did you think? The first craft brew I had was a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. Wow. Can't say that it is anywhere near my favorite beer now but it was and I believe still is an excellent transition beer into the craft brew world.

Do you homebrew? If yes, favorite homebrew to date: I dabble with homebrewing but until I get a bigger place I only brew about once a year. That Brooklyn 1 gallon kit is very appealing though! I just brewed my first all-grain batch with my dad a couple months ago and it turned out excellent. A super hoppy IPA that tasted better than any homebrew I have had.

How’d you hear about the pdxbeergeeks? I met some of you at the Beer Bloggers Conference in Portland and thoroughly enjoyed not just the pdxbeergeek perspective, but ALL of the Portland Beer Bloggers as a community working together.

What does being a beer geek mean to you? Being a beer geek tome means getting excited when talking about beer. I get this rush when I talk about new beer, new breweries and I love talking beer with people. No one one-upping each other. Just a great conversation about beer

If you could change one thing about beer culture in the US, what would it be? While this is slowly changing for the better, I would like to see a faster acceptance and appreciation for craft beer. Too many times someone walks into the local brewery and asks for a macro beer. When they are told that only craft beer is available they leave. Come on!

What do you love about Portland’s Craft Beer scene? Having been there for 6 days, knowing I didn't even scratch the tip of the Beervana iceberg makes me excited to come back. Bailey's Taproom and Belmont Station were my favorite spots that I hit on my trip. Bailey's is the definition of a beer geeks bar, all because of that awesome LCD screen that shows who is drinking in the bar and displaying how much of a certain beer is left, nerd awesomeness.

Meet the Geeks: St. Louis Edition: Troika Brodsky

Favorite Beer: The two answers that I give most often to this question are “The beer in my hand” and “Free Beer”. I’m not sure that makes me sound like a Beer Geek as much as it does functional alcoholic, but for the most part, it’s pretty true. I don’t have a go-to style, I prefer to play the field and bounce around. Variety is the spice of life after all, and craft beer offers so much variety, I can’t really imagine settling on just one brew, that over and over again, wins out in my mind over all others. All of that said, I spend most of my days and a lot of nights talking about and drinking my brewery’s beer, and considering Schlafly brews well over 50 styles every year, I can pretty much stay close to home and still taste the rainbow. This also brings us back full circle to my two most often given answers in that being Communications Director for Schlafly Beer, Schlafly Beer tends to satisfy both of my criteria for Favorite Beer.

Favorite Beer Haunt: The Schlafly Tap Room in downtown St. Louis. The brewery/restaurant not only boasts 18 different Schlafly styles on draft and cask, but some of the best food in town. There’s literally a menu item called the “Plate of Swine” that has beer battered bacon as one of the three swine preparations. The building itself is beautiful and oozing personality. Built in 1902 to house a printing company, the Schlafly Tap Room is now listed on the Historic Register. It sat empty throughout much of the 60’s and 70’s and almost burnt to the ground in a massive downtown firestorm. Later, the City allowed it to be briefly lit back on fire for it’s film debut in John Carpenter’s cult classic “Escape From New York”. Turns out downtown St. Louis in the late 70’s/early 80’s was the perfect stand in for a post apocalyptic New York City. We bought the building and restored it and first opened our doors in 1991, which made us the first new brewery to open up in St. Louis since Prohibition. In addition to great food and beer, we also host live music every weekend, a ton of community events, and seven huge annual beer/food festivals. So yeah, a pretty awesome place to eat and drink with an incredible vibe. I love it, and I get to work right above it.

What was the first craft brew you ever tried? What did you think? I want to say the first “craft” beer I remember drinking was Dixie Blackened Voodoo. I may not have been my first, but it was the first I remember drinking, really liking, and looking for again. That said, I may or may not have, exactly, completely, been of legal drinking age, and can say that this was the first time I remember drinking something with a significant amount of flavor (I remember it as dark and a bit smoky). Unfortunately, I believe Dixie was flooded out by Katrina and now this beer is contract brewed up in Wisconsin. Still, this was my introduction to a wider world of beer and by age 23, I was working for Schlafly.

Do you homebrew? Other than brewing a terrible batch of beer with Mr. Beer back in high school, I don’t homebrew. I remember reading the directions and seeing that alcohol content was dictated by the amount of sugar I added, so in all of my 17 year-old wisdom, I added about 4 times as much sugar as the recipe called for. Not recommended. I do think I drank all of the beer. This was during a time in my life when I had the film Strange Brew on heavy rotation.

How’d you hear about the pdxbeergeeks? To be quite honest, the first time I became aware of pdxbeergeeks was after someone stuck a pdxbeergeeks bumper sticker onto the rear end of an a young woman I had just met and was chatting up on the Thursday night prior to the start of the 2011 Beer Bloggers Conference in Portland. PDXbeergeeks has been on my radar ever since and I’m happy to say that the young woman in question and myself have been happily dating for the past six months. As my best friend from high school, and current Social Media Director for New Belgium Brewing Co. said to me, “Beer Bloggers Conference...who knew?”

What does being a beer geek mean to you? For me, being a beer geek is more about being part of a community of beer lovers than it is about simply loving beer. Anyone can sit around and enjoy a great beer (or a crappy beer for that matter), but it’s something entirely different when you suddenly have other people to talk about that beer with and talk about why you love it or hate it, or what the latest news from your favorite brewery is all about. A beer geek is certainly going to be a beer drinker, but being a beer drinker definitely doesn’t make you a geek. As we all know, craft beer only accounts for about 5% of all beer consumed in the US, and it’s pretty safe to say that your true “beer geeks” represent an even smaller percentage, still, of that 5%. That means we’re a pretty elite crew. We know the speak, we know how to communicate about what we like, we have our favorite beers and breweries, a lot of us make our own beer, either at home or at a brewery proper...there’s a lot of beards...where was I? Oh, the point is, there’s a common ground of passion, interest, and love for great beer between beer geeks, no matter how passionately we might disagree with one another at times, and being able to relate to one another in that way means that A) we can usually spot each other even when we’re total strangers, and B) we can then probably strike up a fun conversation over a beer incredibly easily, and that is really cool.

If you could change one thing about beer culture in the US, what would it be? I honestly think the beer culture is incredibly healthy. We’ve had 5 new breweries open in St. Louis in the past year, and that is a national growth trend, so clearly beer drinkers are getting more educated and are open to embracing something more than light lager, which is cause to rejoice. Just yesterday Mississippi changed it’s laws to allow for higher alcohol beer, and that legislation came about, in large part, to a grass roots movement by “beer geeks”. How awesome is that.

What do you love about Portland’s Craft Beer Scene?
Obviously there is a lot to love in the Portland Craft Beer Scene, but I have a much more personal connection than just delicious, hoppy goodness. For years, I worked at a Summer Camp in Northern Wisconin (I even did it for a few years after I started at Schlafly, because I would quit and come back.) It was at this camp that I first met an 8th grader named Ben Edmunds. This name may sound familiar as he is now the Brewmaster for Breakside, and from everything I read (and tasted last Fall), he’s doing an amazing job. Well...I was his cabin counselor when he was in 8th grade...and then later he worked for me in our outdoor education program. I’ve attached photos what both of those scenarios looked like. BEHOLD! Point being, I can tell you for an absolutely certainty, that everything awesome Ben Edmunds is doing for the Portland Craft Beer Scene, is because of me. I claim it all.

Favorite Beer Haunt: An Droichead Beag in Dingle, County Kerry – or any other old, dark pub in Ireland.

What was the first craft brew you ever tried? What did you think? My college roommate drank Dundee Original Honey Brown Lager – I’d never had more than a sip of beer before college and she (being 3 years older than me) took it upon herself to ensure I didn’t begin my college experience by “drinking sh*tty beers.”

Do you homebrew? If yes, favorite homebrew to date: Does kombucha count? I mean, I’m trying to brew kombucha, but I keep forgetting about it while it ferments in a dark cabinent.

How’d you hear about the pdxbeergeeks? I met Michael and Emily at the pre-Beer Bloggers Conference pub crawl in Portland last August. Michael looks just like one of my second-cousins, so I heard about pdxbeergeeks after I went up to introduce myself (and make sure he wasn’t my cousin). Then he gave me a pdxbeergeek sticker, and I like stickers.

What does being a beer geek mean to you? It means a lot of different things to me, the term “beer geek.” For me, I like to think of myself as a beer geek by proximity – I love people who are passionate not only about the brews, but perhaps more importantly, about the people and culture that surround beer.

If you could change one thing about beer culture in the US, what would it be? I’d make everyone hold hands and sing Kumbaya. Or better yet, I’d make them all sing karaoke together. Which may or may not accomplish anything, but I think it would be a good time, nevertheless.






What do you love about Portland’s Craft Beer scene? It’s so fun! Portland itself is neat, the people are involved, and the breweries want to share nothing but their best with you. And while I’ve never been a big fan of hops (GASP! Shhhh, don’t tell anyone), every time I sit down with a new IPA to give it another go, I think about all my friends in PDX and it makes it a little more enjoyable to me (:

#pdxbeergeeks at the CBC2012 : part I

It's been an intense couple of days so far at CBC2012. After waking up at 4am, I arrived in San Diego to overcast skies and one friend richer; I was fortunate enough to have bees rated next to Mike Kinion from Vertigo Brewing in Hillsboro. Seated behind us were Preston of Cascade Barrel House, and Yetta from Hop & Vine. Mike and I grabbed the free shuttle to Hotel Circle, and the fun for CBC began. Wednesday passed in a blur.



Over to the Town and Country Resort to check in and get badges, and then out to Gordon Biersch for an open house lunch. Met a ton of people. Walked back to the hotel and took a brief nap with the breeze from now sunny San Diego filtering in the open door. A quick change, and it was off to the Canny Awards with Ginger, where I was very kindly asked to participate as a judge (I was really geeing out at this point. I won't lie). After an hour and a half of gazing at lovely beer cans (and one that shall remain nameless, but was, uh, tacky, to say the least), we made our respective choices for the categories; graphic design, use of color, illustration of name, seasonal/limited release, character, local tie in, and shelf presence.

Changing quickly back at the bat cave/hotel room, we were ready to board the buses for the San Diego Zoo. So many beers! Healthy food (lots of veggies)! Peacocks! Skyfari (an aerial tram)! And, saw some of my favorite people: Matt from Oakshire & Jamie from Ninkasi, and made some new friends as well, including JJ from Petaluma Hills and Acacia from Anderson Valley. While the Zoo was closed, we were able to see some of the animals from our birds' eye view up in the Skyfari - a gorilla, a dingo, flamingos, some monkeys, an ibex-ish critter, and more!

By 8:00 pm the party was winding down at the Zoo, so Julie Wortell of PubQuest came to pick us up and drove to the Toronado, where Deschutes was co-hosting an evening celebrating The Love of Beer's Alison Grayson. While I loved seeing Veronica Vega from Deschutes, and Alison Grayson, it was very crowded and I was growing weary.

I hopped in a cab (perfect timing, there just happened to be one dropping people off) and got back to the hotel to enjoy a lovely evening of rest.

Interview Series : Meet the Geek : Sarah Pederson aka Saraveza

Favorite Beer: At the moment, a vintage Scaldis Prestige would be a magical gift. But I’ll take a local and fresh IPA any day!

Favorite Beer Haunt: Luigi’s Pizza in Shawano, Wisconsin. The first place in my home town that really showed an interest in craft beer.

What was the first craft brew you ever tried? What did you think? When I moved to Portland, Deschutes Black Butte Porter was a go-to for me. It opened the door to beer exploration. It wasn’t until I tried a Hair of the Dog, Fred that I was absolutely mesmerized by beer.

Do you homebrew? If yes, favorite homebrew to date: I used to, but not much these days.

How’d you hear about the pdxbeergeeks? How can you NOT know about PDXBEERGEEKS?

What does being a beer geek mean to you? It means being a warrior in this Craft Beer Revolution. It means engaging with others. It means “thinking and drinking.” It means having an ongoing interest in what’s happening in each glass. It means sharing your beer knowledge and always being open to learning more. It means supporting the local economy.

I love working, learning and playing in beer. I’m going to work for a very long time and I can’t imagine a better way to handle that than being a student and teacher of beer and beer culture.

If you could change one thing about beer culture in the US, what would it be? I would increase the overall understanding of beer’s versatility. I’d love for the average beer drinker to know that some beers can be drank in a 5 oz snifter and enjoyed in place of a disgestif. I’d love for it to be common knowledge that you can age beers - not just wine - in your basement and create amazing flavors with patience. It would miraculous if people across the country started ordering their beer based on the idea that your meal can be elevated with the right beverage in the right glass. In Beervana we’re well on our way to making these commonplace practices, but that’s not the case in most cities. There’s a lot of education that needs to be carried out to make this happen. There’s a whole segment of the market that our beloved craft brewers are just waiting for to open up. And once it does, the sky’s the limit! Viva la Craft Beer Revolution!

What do you love about Portland’s Craft Beer scene? The fact that we truly do have neighborhood breweries. Every section of town has their local brewpub and there’s nothing cooler than that. We, the people, really get to be close to the beer and the brewers. This makes the local beer “our beer.” I take a lot of pride and sense of ownership with Portland’s beers.
