Spending The Holidays With Lompoc Brewing

Lompoc Brewing is up to it again. Much like last year, they are going all out to help us celebrate with seven holiday themed beers to help us cope with the forth-coming insanity. This number is down from last year when ten offerings were on the table.  Still no disappointment, and solid as always.  This year I was joined by good friend and long time supporter of #pdxbeergeeks, Daniel Roy, along with other fine members of the Portland beer culture scene.

First up was the Jolly Bock. A wonderful lager with a rich malt character, balanced with a spicy hop bitterness.

Dan Roy - This really reminds me a a late night Christmas Eve. The kids are tucked in bed while "Santa" presents are being delivered. Then sitting and relaxing with a nice malty beer.

Our next offering was the ever delightful 8 Malty Nights. A chocolate rye beer lightly hopped with English hops.

#pdxbeergeeks - I really enjoyed this more then last years batch. Drinking it is like sitting around after a good hearty meal just hanging out with family and friends.

Franc'ly Brewdolph was next. Aged for a year in Cabernet barrels, this Belgian style red ale has a malty and creamy body.

Dan Roy - I'm flooded with memories of spiced wine at the table late Christmas night, Beer and spiced wine aromas filling the air.

C-Sons Greetings is one I'm always looking forward to each season, so I was glad to see it in the line up. An incredible Imperial IPA.

#pdxbeergeeks - This reminds of driving to the farm to harvest our Christmas tree. Then bring it home to decorate it. I can't get enough of this winter seasonal.

Ahhh the Old Tavern Rat. An aged barley wine that has a strong bitter, yet well balanced sweetness.

Dan Roy - This is like a great Christmas dessert. Even better as it warms up. makes me want some toffee pudding.

Last but not least was the Bourbon Barrel Aged Wee Heavy. A collaboration beer with the Ladies of Lagers and Ales (LOLA).  After this Wee Heavy was made, it was aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels for nine months.

#pdxbeergeeks - I feel like I'm hanging out with my grandfather, sneaking drinks off of his warmed up bourbon.  Remembering the warmth it would provide.

Also in the line up will be Blitzen, a spiced golden ale that wasn't ready for the preview. Certainly each of these beers will provide you with memories of past holiday times. A Day With Sean Burke and Brewvana Brewery Tours

#pdxbeergeeks was fortunate enough to HOP on the Brewvana connoisseur tour Sunday led by Sean Burke of The Commons Brewery. Sean took us to some of his favorite locations around Portland.

Our first stop was, of course, The Commons Brewery, where we picked up Sean and were treated to samples from Michael Wright, owner of the brewery. The real stand out beer was Walnut, a delicious Belgian porter. (There are no walnuts in the beer.)

Our second stop was the always delightful Upright Brewing. Alex was there to give us a brief tour of the facilities.  At this stop we were fortunate to sample a beer of our choosing. I went with the barrel aged Seven. Delicious!

Our third stop was Old Town Pizza, a local place I've had the pleasure of visiting a few times. We were treated to some damn yummy pizza, and several samples of the beer brewed there. The oatmeal stout was certainly worth having. I want more! Also if you ever stop in, I highly recommend an order of the garlic knots.

Our fourth and final stop was Occidental Brewing, nestled just underneath the St. John's bridge next to Cathedral Park. This was a real treat as I had not had a chance to visit. I really enjoyed the Dunkelweizen.

Certainly a fun time was had by all. If you have never taken a tour with Brewvana I highly recommend doing it. It's always a good time!!

Connoisseur Tour with Sean Burke

PORTLAND, Ore. (November 12, 2012) ⎯ The November installment of BREWVANA’s monthly Connoisseur Tour series takes Sean Burke, brewer for The Commons Brewery, on the bus where he will lead the tour to his favorite Portland spots. A Eugene native, Sean started as a home brewer and joined The Commons after graduation from the Doemans Academy. The tour will take place Sunday, November 18th from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

The tour will begin at The Commons with a sampling of their European inspired beers made with Northwest grown ingredients and tour of the brewery. Next up the bus heads to Upright Brewing where owner and brewer Alex Ganum will give a tour of his facility along with a sampling of their farmhouse inspired beers made with a Pacific Northwest twist. A midafternoon lunch and beers will be served at Old Town Pizza and Brewing which launched its 7bbl brewing system earlier this year. The final stop on the tour will be Occidental Brewing Co. in the St. John’s neighborhood for a sampling of their German inspired beers.

Tickets for BREWVANA’s Connoisseur Tour are $85/person and include transportation, all food and beer, pretzel necklace, tasting journal and Pilsner glass. Fort George Tap Takeover at Roscoe's

Our friends over at Fort George are at it again. This time with the largest Fort George tap takeover outside of Astoria at Roscoe's! 15 taps of Fort George beery goodness. Party starts at 4 pm.
