Interview Series : Meet the Geek : Charlie Herrin

Charlie Herrin
Name: Charlie Herrin

Hometown: Vancouver, WA

Favorite Beer: Gigantic/Three Floyds: Axes of Evil

Favorite Beer Haunt: Baileys Taproom

What was the first craft brew you ever tried? What did you think? I had two beers that fine evening and which one I had first is debatable. I had Deschutes Pale Ale, and Alaskan Brewing Co's Amber. My first thought was Damn there is good beer available in the US.

Do you homebrew? If yes, favorite homebrew to date: Yes, I have an ESB recipe that I formulated and brew. I originally wanted to clone Fullers ESB but once I got started I couldn't help changing a few things to suit my taste. Every time I brew a batch of this my friends somehow realize it's on tap and start dropping by.

How’d you hear about the pdxbeergeeks? I found you online when I was looking for more beer information but I really looked at you after talking to the Dukester.

What does being a beer geek mean to you? Sharing my love and admiration for the Craft Beer scene in the US. Always searching for different ways to educate the average beer drinker to the incredible options that await them.

If you could change one thing about beer culture in the US, what would it be? I know you only asked for one answer but I've got two. One, fix the Three Tier System so it works like it was intended. Two, help bring awareness to what is going on in beer in every state in the union. Tell the stories behind these folks (Brewers) who are poring their everything into the beer they make.

What do you love about Portland’s Craft Beer scene? Where do you begin? I love it all. The incredible folks who bring us their great beers to the fun people who go out and drink them. We are truly spoiled with all of the choices we have.
