Interview Series: Meet the Geeks: TastyBeers

Doug aka Tasty Beers at Hopworks
Name: Doug Smith

Hometown:
Portland, Oregon

Favorite Beer:
The one that’s in front of me. ;-) But in general, I’m a hophead through and through. IPA me!

Favorite Beer Haunt:
Horse Brass, Apex, The Beermongers, Belmont Station, Green Dragon, Bailey’s Taproom (I couldn’t pick just one)

What was the first craft brew you ever tried? What did you think?
Deschutes Black Butte Porter, when I was in school at the University of Oregon. I was completely blown away by how smooth and tasty it was, and immediately thought, “I’ll never drink crap beer again!”

Do you homebrew? If yes, favorite homebrew to date:

Yes, I’m still doing extract, though. My favorite brew to date is a clone of Barley Brown’s Turmoil CDA. I just hope I can reproduce it!

How’d you hear about the pdxbeergeeks?
I saw some tweets between Emily (@emilyengdahl) and Michael (@mmcooljam) after they’d met at the Pucker Fest at Belmont Station. I think I just butted into their conversation, and next thing you know I was a member. ;-)

What does being a beer geek mean to you?
I enjoy sharing my knowledge of craft beer with friends, family, and random people I’ve never even met. I’ve converted macro swill drinkers from all over the country into craft beer drinkers, and to me that’s what it’s all about: expanding awareness and appreciation of great craft beer. My friends ALWAYS depend on me to tell them which beers they should be trying next!

If you could change one thing about beer culture in the US, what would it be?

I just hope the trend toward craft beer and away from BudMillerCoors continues. We’re making great strides! Sometimes, the battles between different areas of the US over who makes the best beer, who created a certain style, etc. get annoying, as well. Can’t we all just get along??? That said, it’s definitely called a Cascadian Dark Ale. ;-)

What do you love about Portland’s Craft Beer scene?

The fact that almost everyone is so friendly and approachable. From the brewers of the largest breweries in the city all the way to the casual craft beer fan, everyone has the same interests in mind. Enjoy great beer with each other!
